How to Create an eBook in 2026: From First Idea to a Finished Digital Book

There has probably never been an easier time to make a book. That does not mean there has never been an easier time to make a good book.

Writing software, artificial intelligence, image generators, layout tools and digital publishing have compressed a process that once required a small production team. One person can now move from a rough idea to a finished digital book. The interesting question is no longer whether the technology can generate pages. It is whether those pages become something another person genuinely wants to read.

What Is an eBook in 2026?

An eBook is a book designed primarily for digital reading. That can mean a reflowable EPUB that adapts to a phone or e-reader, a carefully designed PDF with a fixed page layout, or both. The right format depends on the book rather than fashion.

EPUB is generally the better choice for conventional text-heavy books because readers can resize text and the pages adapt to different screens. PDF remains extremely useful for illustrated books, magazines, workbooks, art books, downloadable guides and other projects where precise page design matters.

Start With the Reader, Not the Software

The strongest starting point is a simple question: who is this book for, and what will they have gained when they reach the final page?

A broad idea such as “music” can become a guide to making electronic music at home. “Business” can become a practical journey from an idea to a functioning company. “Cats” might become an illustrated children’s adventure. A clear reader and a clear promise give every later decision a direction.

Build the Book Before Writing It

Before drafting thousands of words, sketch the architecture. Write a working title, a one-paragraph description and a chapter list. Give every chapter a job. If two chapters do the same job, combine them. If a chapter does not move the reader forward, question why it is there.

This is one of the places where AI can be genuinely useful. It can explore structures quickly, challenge an outline, identify missing steps and suggest alternative sequences. But the author should remain the editor. A generated outline is a proposal, not a command.

Using AI Without Producing an AI-Sounding Book

AI can help brainstorm, organise notes, develop outlines, draft sections, tighten prose, find repetition and explore alternative explanations. The danger appears when speed becomes the objective.

A one-prompt book may technically contain thousands of words, yet still feel empty. Good books contain choices: what to leave out, what deserves another page, which example makes an idea click, where to slow down, and when a sentence should simply be allowed to breathe.

A better workflow is collaborative. Give the system your notes, experiences, research and intended audience. Work chapter by chapter. Read what comes back. Correct it. Add what only you know. Remove generic filler. Check factual claims against reliable sources. Then edit the whole manuscript again as a single book.

Writing Fiction and Children’s eBooks

Fiction adds another problem: continuity. Characters need stable personalities, locations need internal logic and events need consequences. Before drafting, create a compact story bible containing character descriptions, relationships, locations, visual rules and the basic story arc.

Illustrated children’s books benefit enormously from planning the page turns before producing final artwork. Think in spreads. Decide what the words contribute and what the image contributes. If the picture already tells the joke, the text does not need to explain it again.

Illustrations and Visual Identity

Digital books are not limited to text. Photography, diagrams, pixel art, papercraft, painting, 3D imagery and AI-assisted illustration can all become part of the language of a book.

Consistency matters more than spectacle. A book containing twenty individually impressive images can still look disjointed if every page appears to belong to a different project. Establish a palette, aspect ratio, character design, lighting approach and level of detail before creating the full image set.

Editing: The Stage You Cannot Skip

Finishing the first draft is not finishing the book. Read it for structure first. Does it make sense in this order? Then read for repetition. Then accuracy. Then voice. Finally proofread the small details.

For factual books, verify dates, statistics, quotations, technical instructions and claims. AI can assist with editing, but it should not be treated as an authority simply because a sentence sounds confident.

EPUB vs PDF

Use EPUB when the reading experience should adapt to the device. It is especially suitable for novels, essays and conventional nonfiction. Use PDF when the page itself is part of the design: illustrated books, magazines, portfolios, worksheets and visually complex publications.

There is no rule saying you must choose only one. A project can have a responsive EPUB edition and a beautifully designed PDF edition serving different readers.

Design the Book Like a Book

Typography, margins, spacing and hierarchy quietly determine whether a digital book feels professional. Keep body text comfortable. Make chapter headings unmistakable. Avoid filling every centimetre of the page. Give images room. Use consistent paragraph spacing and heading styles.

The cover has a different job: it has to communicate at a glance. Test it small. If the title disappears when the cover is thumbnail-sized, simplify it.

Preview Everything

Never assume an exported file works because the source document looked right. Open the actual PDF. Test the EPUB in more than one reader if possible. Check the table of contents, links, images, page breaks, headings and metadata. Look at it on a phone as well as a large monitor.

Where Can You Publish an eBook?

A digital book does not have to live in a single marketplace. Authors can use major ebook stores, specialist distributors, direct-download platforms, their own websites, mailing lists or combinations of these routes.

Direct publishing is particularly interesting for independent creators because the book can become part of a wider creative world rather than an isolated product. An article can lead to a book; a book can lead to artwork, video, music or another book.

Can You Sell eBooks Yourself?

Yes. A website can offer a downloadable book directly, subject to the payment, tax, consumer-law and technical requirements relevant to the seller. Direct sales give creators more control over presentation and the relationship with their audience, while established stores can offer discovery and familiar purchasing systems. Neither route has to exclude the other.

What Makes an eBook Worth Paying For?

Information alone is no longer scarce. Search engines and AI systems can produce answers instantly. A book therefore has to offer something more valuable: selection, structure, judgement, imagination, experience, beauty or a journey.

Readers are not merely buying words. They are buying the work of deciding which words belong together.

A Practical eBook Workflow

  1. Define the reader and the promise.
  2. Research the subject and gather your own material.
  3. Create and challenge the outline.
  4. Draft chapter by chapter.
  5. Add original examples, experiences and perspective.
  6. Fact-check anything that needs to be true.
  7. Edit for structure, repetition and voice.
  8. Create a consistent visual system and cover.
  9. Format the book for EPUB, PDF or both.
  10. Preview the finished files on real devices.
  11. Prepare the description, metadata and publishing material.
  12. Publish, listen to readers and improve the next book.

The New Independent Publishing Studio

The biggest change may not be any single AI tool. It is that the walls between writer, illustrator, designer and publisher have become thinner. A creator can now experiment across all of them.

That is powerful, but it also makes taste more important. When everyone has access to extraordinary tools, the advantage shifts toward ideas, judgement, consistency and the willingness to keep improving a piece of work after the machine says it is finished.

The technology can help make the book. The reason for making it still has to come from us.
